McDaid Murder Suspect Goaded and Tormented By Republicans

One of the accused John Thompson is said to have been tormented by republicans in the Heights estate. It came to light after graffiti was daubed on the wall adjacent to Somerset Drive "R.I.P John Thompson". Most of the Catholic, Protestant and Polish community know from living in the area that local Drug Dealers and people involved in antisocial behaviour acting under the republican name have tormented The Elderly, The Protestants, The Polish and indeed the Catholic communities. The graffiti has since been sprayed over just before Mr McDaids funeral...

Attacks On Protestants In The Heights

After the rioting in the Waterside area of the as posted previously. A bedroom of a 2 year old child was attacked when masked men had appeared to have came from the republican Somerset Drive area into the mainly Protestant Killowen area and threw a brick through the window. The PSNI have confirmed that they are investigating the incident.

The attackers then made their way down Lambeth Way and threw bricks at a bar in the town. The bars doorman was outside with customers at the time who chased the attackers away. A sorce told "We were lucky the doorman was outside as there was people sitting at the windows on this occasion and someone could have been seriously injured."

As reported in the Coleraine Times many taxis have been threatened and followed lately along with one being ruined with a paint like substance when again attackers proceeded to a mans home in the mainly Protestant Killowen area to carry out the attack. The PSNI again confirm these attacks and are said to be highly motivated to bring the element of trouble to justice.
Violence erupted in the waterside area of Coleraine 05/10/2009 after republicans attacked police with missiles after returning from a celtic support evening in Belfast.

Ugly scenes broke out in the Heights area in Co Londonderry, where months before Catholic community worker Kevin McDaid died after taking a tragic heart attack after an altercation with Loyalists. Stones were thrown at PSNI officers and fireworks were set off. It is said to have started as a bus load of republicans turned up at The Castle Bar which is considered a republican pub.

The unrest occurred at around 8pm as police responded to bottles and bricks being thrown in the Waterside area.

After attempting to disperse the crowd officers were attacked.

PSNI officers met with community representatives in a bid to resolve the trouble which continued for a number of hours. The Castle Bar had to close its doors in order to remain in one piece as one source described.

Police last night said they had no reports of injuries and the situation had calmed.

It is understood, however, that officers were still in the area at 11pm. And were investigating reports that Protestant homes were attacked see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/foyle_and_west/8290074.stm

In May, Mr McDaid (49) died from a heart attack in the Heights area by a loyalist mob following Rangers' victory over Celtic in the Scottish league title race.

DUP Mayor of Coleraine Sandy Gilkinson appealed for calm.

“This (area) is where the trouble always comes from.

“I don’t know all the facts but the football match could have sparked the trouble, that is what sparked it the last time.

He added: “I would condemn anyone attacking police officers, they are out there trying to do a service.”

It is thought that republicans are becoming more hostile towards the PSNI after they claim McDaid was murdered even though the pathologist ruled that it was a heart attack and he was not beaten to death by anyone.

Kevin McDaid "Murder Case" Coleraine Loyalist Mob

On 24 May 2009 SF supporter Kevin McDaid who is said to have had links to the P.I.R.A in the past died of a heart attack around 15 minutes after being attacked by a loyalist mob at Somerset Drive area of the town. In a statement to the PSNI it is thought the McDaid sons have told of how they approached the Protestant people with pick axe handles etc.(Source Wikipedia) His wife, went to his aid and was also attacked. Another man was injured during the incident but has now fully recovered.

It is thought that the trouble erupted after republicans including Skeets Neill, The McDaids and others were erecting Tri-Colour flags due to their upset that Rangers clenched the Scottish Premiere League Title from Celtic.

There was reports that the Loyalists were goaded by republicans all day via phone calls to a local bar. One prominent republican described as "Mafia Don" orchestrated a road block at Somerset Drive and helped to locate weapons to use if the Loyalists came to take the flags down.

The PSNI have ruled out paramilitary involvement see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/foyle_and_west/8068621.stm

Below are a few images from Somerset Drive which has been taken over by Drug dealers, Alcoholics and Anti-Social Behaviour. Many Protestants have now been forced from the area, even before Mr McDaid died.
